This rural town is considered, along with Iga in Mie Prefecture, as the cradle and homeland of the ninja culture and art, ninjutsu. A supposed training centre, hidden in the surrounding reliefs, has even been rehabilitated as an entertainment centre so that travellers can try their hand at the techniques of these shadow warriors. The village of Koka was initially founded in 1955 before obtaining the status of a town in 2004 by merging with neighbouring villages. The rural landscapes of this part of the prefecture are peaceful and allow visitors to take a break from the busy urban centres.
