Located 25 km south of Kashihara and less than two hours by train from Nara, Yoshino is known to all Japanese for its more than 30,000 cherry trees that bloom in early April on the mountain slopes(hanami). The site, famous for its historical importance, is now protected by the Yoshino Kumano National Park. It is also a devotional center for devotees of Shintō kami from the mountain. The village at the top is full of places of worship, but also stores and ryokans. It is a popular destination for hikers. Mount Yoshino is part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains".
