The city of Iga was created in 2004, thanks to the administrative gathering of the city of Ueno and 5 municipalities. It thus took the name of the former province of Iga. Located in the northwest of the prefecture, Iga is famous for its ninjas, the city's number one attraction. The school of ninjutsu (the art of stealth), in the ancient city of Ueno, was one of the two main schools of ninja in Japan (along with that of Koka in Shiga Prefecture). The city is also known as the birthplace of Basho Matsuo, one of the greatest poets of the archipelago who lived in the early Edo period.
