The hinterland north of Gyumri, at an altitude of 1,500 m, is a high plateau surrounded by mountains to the east and west, where the Akhurian flows, marking the border with Turkey. It is an agricultural plain (especially livestock farming) where life is rather harsh due to a very harsh climate, alternating peaks of -40°C in winter, which gives the Shirak plain the appellation of Caucasian Siberia, and +30°C in summer. In these desolate places, opportunities for accommodation and food are rare, with nearby Gyumri providing for them.
