The small town of Lindenberg (population 11,000) once enjoyed international renown for its hat industry. There is evidence of straw hat-making in Lindenberg as far back as the 16th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the manufacture of straw hats was industrialized, and by the beginning of the 20th century, production had reached 8 million pieces per year! Models diversified with the use of leather, fur and synthetic materials, which proved successful. But by the 1960s and 1970s, hats were no longer in vogue, forcing some older companies to close down. The glory days were over, but not the memories.
