With almost 30,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest town in Vorarlberg after Dornbirn and Feldkirch. The charm and romance of Lake Constance (Bodensee) permeate this resort, languishing along the blue waters of the lake against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. This town of 28,000 inhabitants, at the south-eastern end of the lake, is home to a chic tourist industry, with hotels and casinos by night and shopping by day. For generations, Bregenz has been renowned for its textile and fashion arts. As for the cultural life of this small capital, it is distinguished by its audacity. Its famous festival is particularly renowned for its avant-garde staging, as is the Kunsthaus Bregenz, or KUB, which opened in 1997 and whose resolutely modernist glass cube shape is reflected in the waters of the lake and defies the opulent houses that surround it. Its ability to surprise by thwarting clichés is perhaps not unrelated to the particular location of this regional capital of Vorarlberg, at an altitude of over 400 m, in the extreme west of the country, sharing the shores of the lake with Switzerland and Germany. Liechtenstein is not far away either, opposite Feldkirch, a little further south. In any case, a stopover in Bregenz is a must, with a boat trip on Lake Constance and a climb to the top of Mount Pfänder (1,064 m) by cable car, with the Pfänderbahndonne, for a breathtaking view of more than 240 Alpine peaks.
