When the sun shines, Lake Placid is so characteristic of blue that it has given its name to a type of guitar that has appropriated its colours. South of the lake, Lake Placid is a quiet and relaxing town of just 2,500 residents, overlooking a second, smaller lake, Mirror Lake. The region is a popular destination both on sunny days, when there are plenty of hiking, boating and cycling opportunities, and in winter, when snow covers the landscape and skiing becomes the region's flagship activity, thanks to the presence of Whiteface Mountain. In fact, two Olympic Winter Games have already been held there, in 1932 and 1980, as many as in Saint-Moritz.
