We are just passing through Silver Bay, but there is one place worth seeing: Black Beach (sometimes called Onyx Beach), a mysterious looking black sand beach that is accessed by following a small unpaved road that branches off Highway 61. The black colour of the sand is not naturally occurring: it comes from taconite tailings, a sedimentary rock rich in black iron oxide particles mined in the area and dumped into the lake. The beach is framed by high rocks that can be carefully climbed. It is possible to swim in summer. A serene place, off the beaten track, with a little taste of well-kept secrets.
