There is an atmosphere of independence and freedom at Bennington. In the historic district of Old Bennington, the Bennington Battle Monument, a 90 m high obelisk recalls the battle of 1777 during which the locals tried to repel the British troops. Some of the buildings bear witness to the city's artisanal past where textile industries mingled with potters and iron mining. To learn more about the history of the area, visit the Bennington Museum. With a population of 15,000, Bennington is Vermont's third most populous city. It has a pretty attractive downtown area that is a great place to walk around.
