Imabari is the second largest city in the prefecture of Ehime. Surrounded by the sea, the city has developed around maritime traffic for many years. Following a recent merger, the population is now estimated at 165 000. The city houses six temples of the pilgrimage of Shikoku. These are the temples Enmeiji, Nankobo, Taisanji, Eifukuji, Senyuji, and Kokubunji. It has acquired an international reputation thanks to its textile industry, Imabari towels and the shipbuilding of sail boats. At last, it is one of the starting points for the Shimanami-Kaido bicycle track, which joins Onomichi.
