A town of 85,000 inhabitants, Uwajima has an interesting little castle and a beautiful garden. The region is also famous for its bullfighting shows, Japanese style. Here, there is no bullfighting or killing, but rather a kind of fight between two bulls in the style of sumo wrestling. The first animal to push the other out of the arena wins. Walking around the area, you will see some very photogenic terraced crops. The town can be reached by train from Matsuyama in about 1h20 (Uwakai). The specialty is tai-meshi, a sashimi served with egg yolk and soy sauce on rice.
