Established as a trading post in 1775, it was first named Julianehåb by the Norwegian Anders Olsen as a tribute to Queen Juliana of Denmark. It was then called Qaqortoq (the white one) because of the abundance of ice in its waters and the magnificence of the daisy beds that grow on the edge of the fjord. Qaqortoq is home to beautiful historic buildings dating back to the colonial era and encircling the central square of the old centre with its famous fountain (the only one in the country before the one in Sisimiut). Qaqortoq is also home to an active pool of artists, including Aka Høegh famous for its sculpture park called "Stone and Man" ...
