Located on an island also known as Nanortalik at the mouth of Tasermiut Fiord, the town takes its name from the many polar bears that drift across the ice pack (literally "the place with polar bears") each spring. Nanortalik was founded in 1797 and has a population of 1,400, making it the 10th largest city in the country and the southernmost city in Greenland. It is inhabited by a typical community with wooden houses. It is probably the southern city that has had the most traditional relationship with hunting, which is still very much a part of daily life.
