UPERNAVIARSUK
Upernaviarsuk is a centre for experimental agricultural research and training (a school with 4-5 students per year). Subsidized by the government, experiments are being carried out in order to try to develop new ranges of fruit and vegetables. While global warming certainly allows temperatures to rise, heat periods are still too irregular, as are very frequent climatic disturbances (scattered rains, strong winds, droughts, etc.) in order to imagine a new agricultural model based exclusively on plantations. A report is published every year on the new seeds and varieties tested to encourage local farmers to learn about possible vegetables to plant, and thus to diversify (apart from cattle breeding, the main source of income for farmers). In addition, the fertility of the soil and the clean and relatively dry air make growing conditions generally good. In addition, pests almost do not affect plants and therefore no pesticides are used. Upernaviarsuk grows several fruits and vegetables outside and in greenhouses (potatoes, turnips, iceberg lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, strawberries, berries, carrots, cucumbers...) as well as trees and bushes specially adapted to the Arctic climate. Most farmers also have their own vegetable garden for personal use. Vegetables can be purchased in supermarkets across the country and directly on site. Enjoy it!
