With 20 400 inhabitants, Annaberg-Buchholz is the place of the Arrondissement-Ore district. Its origins date back to the th century. The present city is the result of the merger of two communes, Annaberg and Buchholz, carried out in 1945 by Soviet forces that then occupied the region. It was in the th century, with the discovery of tin deposits and silver in the Ore Mountains, that the city is booming. Annaberg-Buchholz is well known in Germany for its enchanting Christmas market and its artisanales lace-up. An important figure in the history of the city is Barbara Uthmann, a entrepreneur who lived in the th century, considered (mistakenly) as the inventor of the method for the production of spindle lace. His manufacture employed 900 people. Annaberg is a pretty small town and its Gothic church, Saint-Annenkirche, is an architectural marvel that you absolutely will need to visit.
