The charming little town of Shravanabelagola is an important Jain pilgrimage site. The town is 51 km from Hassan, and there is no direct bus service, so you have to go via Channarayapatna. An imposing monolithic statue, the Gommateshwara, has dominated the Vindhyagiri hill since the 10th century. The city also boasts a vast basin from which it takes its name - belaloga means white basin - and an important Jain complex on Chandragiri hill. Don't be surprised to come across naked men: these are Digambara monks, who reject all material possessions in order to live the most ascetic life possible.
