13 km west of Sanchi, near Vidisha. The Udaygiri site, near the Betwa River, is home to some twenty rock sanctuaries carved out of sandstone in the5th century, illustrating the vitality of Gupta art. The first caves in this group were temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu, representing one of the oldest iconographies of Hinduism still present today. One of the most impressive sculptures is that of Vahara, the incarnation of Vishnu as a boar. Other caves are dedicated to Jainism. A guide to the caves can help demystify the religious allegories.
