Tumkur is an industrial city of 305,821 inhabitants 70 km northwest of Bangalore. It was renamed Tumakuru in 2014 but, as is often the case, the locals continue to use the old name. Tumkur is renowned in the region for its thick cotton garment, rope and watch factories, and boasts a food processing plant. The town is famous for its strange conical hill. It is said that in Chola times, the kingdom's guards scanned the plain from the hills surrounding their capital, Gulur. In case of danger, they used drums called tumaki. Hence the name of the town.
