Some 50 km from Bangalore, this small town of 80,000 inhabitants is renowned for its Ramagiri Hills, which offer superb scenery. The site is popular with rock-climbers and climbers of all kinds. Ramanagara, formerly known as Shamserabad during the reign of Tipu Sultan, is also an important center of silk production, earning it the nickname Silk City. The silk produced here is used to supply Mysore's artisans. Near Ramanagara is the Janapada Loka, a branch of the Karnataka Janapada Parishath, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of folk culture.
