Just 20 miles from Louisiana, Jefferson is not particularly typical of Texas. That's the least we can say. With its large majestic villas, its downtown that reminds one of a miniature New Orleans, its bayous, it reminds one more of the Old South than of the Great West. The city experienced a tremendous growth during the 19th century thanks to the river and railroad trade. The Downtown district still bears the traces of this with its brick warehouses. Today, Jefferson is a pretty town where the atmosphere is a little out of time. A somewhat mystical side reinforced by the ghost stories that populate its streets.
