13 km south of Portland, this city is located below the Willamette River Falls and marks the end of the Oregon Trail. Founded in 1829 and until 1851, Oregon City was partly the initiative of John McLoughlin, a fur trader and also founder of Vancouver (Washington State city across from Portland). Today, Oregon City has lost some of its interest, just as its population seems to be escaping. If you are in the area, however, visit the Oregon Trail Interpretive Centre and the Museum of the Oregon Territory. In front of the museum, you can also see Willamette Falls, the largest waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest in terms of water volume.
