Venice is reached by following Highway 23 to its southern end, a stone's throw from the Gulf of Mexico. It is the last community accessible by car near the mouth of the Mississippi River and also marks the end of the Great River Road, earning it the nickname "The end of the world". The community is best known as the starting point for many ocean fishing trips, as is nearby Grand Isle. But its proximity to the Gulf has made it a victim of hurricanes, notably Katrina which almost wiped Venice off the map.
