Cameron is named after Ralph H. Cameron (1863-1953), who was one of the pioneers in the development of the Grand Canyon's mining and later hiking trails. The site is primarily occupied by a Navajo Trading Post built in 1916, established beside the Little Colorado River. Six miles to the north was Tanner's Crossing (named after pioneer Seth Tanner), on the Mormon trail between Utah and the Arizona and New Mexico colonies. The danger of flooding led to the construction of a suspension bridge over the gorge in 1911. This one-lane bridge now carries only an oil pipeline and has been replaced by the present road bridge on US-89.
