Fifty miles east of Cold Springs Station, Highway 50 passes through this village nestled at an altitude of 2,000 meters, halfway between Carson City and Ely. In 1862, the area around this hamlet was unexplored: it was only a stopover for the Pony Express, until a young employee of the company discovered a rich vein of silver there. The population exploded, reaching 10,000 inhabitants. Exploited for 20 years, the metal allowed Austin to develop. Administrative buildings were erected, allowing the village to avoid becoming a ghost town once the vein was exhausted. You will find a few cafés and gas stations.
