Georgetown is a quiet small town located at the south end of The Grand Strand. Located on Winyah Bay at the junction of three rivers, established in 1729, it is the third oldest city in South Carolina (after Charleston and Beaufort). It built its wealth on its harbour, one of the most active of the state. Moreover, the contrast is striking between a very calm and even sleeping downtown and a permanent port area. Centre of a network of plantations specialized in rice and indigo, Georgetown becomes a city of importance in its history. Some of these large plantations are still standing, notably Mansfield Plantation. In the city centre, a wooden pontoon with bars and restaurants runs along the river: It is a very pleasant place to enjoy a drink or lunch.
