Acoma Pueblo, or Sky City, sits on a plateau 110 meters above a vast semi-desert plain, about fifteen miles south of Interstate I-40 and Route 66. Inhabited since the 12th century, the site is still occupied by about 50 people. Its main building is the San Esteban del Rey Mission Church, which dates from 1629. By 2023, the pueblo will still be off-limits to outsiders, hoping to regain its former tourism, with tours still available through the site. Once the site is reopened, you must purchase a permit to photograph the site. It is forbidden to photograph inside the church. However, you can visit the cultural center and museum, which is very informative about this fascinating pueblo, with a special exhibit for the artisan tradition of making ceramic objects. Permission in principle must also be obtained before photographing tribal members or their work.
