El Morro, "the neck" or "the head", is a kind of oasis in the heart of the desert complex of New Mexico, near El Malpais. It is a place of both geographical and historical interest, since it served as a point of contact for many peoples as they moved around the region. The area essentially contains a large sandstone promontory with a water basin at its base, a rare water source in the region. The summit contains the ruins of an ancient pueblo, where about 1,500 people lived from 1275 to 1350, and travellers (Anasazi, Spanish, American pueblos) left nearly 2,000 petroglyphs in the sandstone rock.
