Port Pirie is a small, mainly industrial town of 17,200 inhabitants located 224 kilometers north of Adelaide and 88 kilometers south of Port Augusta. It is home to lead foundries, as well as silver, zinc, copper and gold smelters. There are hotels and restaurants, shops and several service stations. Its passenger station is particularly photogenic, but has been out of use since 1967. It now serves as the Port Pirie National Trust Museum. Stop off at the tourist information center, which is also the regional art gallery.
