Eight kilometers from Xpujil, Becán was the most important Maya city on the River Bec, probably its capital, during the Late Classic and Early Post-Classic periods from 600 to 1000 AD. Its architectural sequence covers more than a millennium: from 100 to 1200 AD. The heart of this vast 18-hectare city has the unique feature, in the whole peninsula, of being surrounded by a ditch 16 m wide and 2.5 m deep, at the time filled with water. Seven entries and bridges had been arranged there to reach the city. In 1934, the explorers imagine again a defensive function to this work, although one leans henceforth also for a hydraulic function
