The archaeological zone is located on a small natural elevation, and its decorative and ornamental richness made it quickly assumed that it was an area destined to the residence of high dignitaries of the capital Becán, as well as to the realization of ceremonial activities. Its name was given in 1966, when it was discovered: Chicanná means in Maya "house of the mouth of the snake", and evokes the zoomorphic representations of the Earth Monster, which decorate the facades of some buildings, including those of the memorable Structure II of the main plaza. Two lodgings, close to the ruins, can be very practical.
