Chacchoben, immersed in a sumptuous natural setting near the Ocho Lagoon, is about halfway between Bacalar and Mahahual and can be reached by a morning excursion from either village. The site, which covered 70 hectares, was only begun to be explored in 1994 and only a small part of it has been uncovered. The archaeological remains are not necessarily the most impressive in the region, but the visit is very pleasant because of its natural and wild environment: you can easily see toucans, iguanas and other species of mammals walking near the pyramids.
