With 31,500 inhabitants, Bangor is Maine's third-largest city. In the 19th century, the town grew rich thanks to the lumber industry. Situated on the Penobscot River, not far from the Canadian border, it quickly became a hub for this trade. This story is told at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum, located in Bradley, 19 km from downtown. Today, Bangor is the cultural and historical center of the region. Visit the Maine Discovery Museum or the University of Maine Art Museum, which features works by Winslow Homer. Bangor's attractive downtown area was renovated in the 1990s.
