Hallowell has much the same population as in 1820, when Maine seceded from Massachusetts. It takes its name from Benjamin Hallowell, a wealthy Boston merchant who obtained a large land grant from the British government in the Kennebec Valley. The town prospered on the timber and fur trades, then became an important shipbuilding site. Between 1783 and 1901, 50 ships were launched from the Hallowell docks. Although sparsely populated, the town's liveliness is concentrated on its main street, lined with stores and restaurants.
