Located 40 minutes north of Portland (Route 1), Bath is a small, quiet town that makes the most of its industrial past. Indeed, until the middle of the 20th century, Bath was one of the largest shipyards on the coast. Today, it's hard to imagine the activity that must have reigned here, so peaceful has this little town become. Bath has a year-round population of around 8,000, although there are many summer visitors. Front Street, the town's main thoroughfare, is home to a number of small cafés and boutiques, but the most interesting place to visit is the Maritime Museum in the south of town, where you can learn more about the town's past.
