This seaside resort is known for its picturesque coastline. Located in the Portland urban area, its pretty shoreline is very popular in summer. Ogunquit means "the place by the sea" in the Abenaki Indian language. Since the 20th century, the beauty of the area has attracted many artists, and the Ogunquit Arts Colony was founded here in 1898. Artists and fishermen still rub shoulders here today. Part of Stephen King's 1978 novel The Scourge is set here. For several decades, a gay community has also settled here, making the village one of New England's most popular gay destinations.
