Located 40 minutes east of Moosehead Lake and nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the East", Gulf Hagas is a 4.8 km long gorge carved by the Pleasant River. The site is a National Natural Heritage Site. A trail has been built to allow hikers to follow the course of the river, at the foot of 40-metre walls. You can discover this natural setting on foot, or by kayak in the summer, which is a good opportunity to get a few scares. The waterfalls are numerous and the river generally runs on a 150-metre drop. In the Gulf Hagas area, you can also visit Katahdin Iron Works, a former ore processing site, attached to the community of Brownville.
