Located two hours northeast of Bangor, Baxter State Park is a popular destination for Maine locals and a few adventurous tourists. People come here in all seasons to fish, hike, ski (cross-country) in the unspoiled wilderness and even hunt. You'll need a permit for all these activities. The park's main attraction is Mt Katahdin, Maine's highest point (1,606 metres). This peak marks the end of the Appalachian Trail. Last but not least, be prepared to be isolated - there are no crowds in these parts. The small village of Millinocket, located 20 miles before the State Park, is a good stop-off for shopping.
