Founded around 1670 by the Abenaki living in the Connecticut Valley, this village was called Arsikantegouk, meaning "river with an empty cabin" (the name of the Saint-François River in this language). When the Abenaki mission on the Chaudière River moved to Odanak, the village and the river took the latter's name, Saint-François. It has only been called Odanak since the beginning of the 20th century. Odanak, which means "in the village," is an Abenaki Native reserve located on the east bank of the Saint-François River. Among its attractions is the Musée des Abénakis, the oldest museum dedicated to Aboriginal culture in Quebec.
