In the 18th century, it was a garrison town, designed to repel a possible American invasion and to protect the loyalists. The Royal Square, formerly the Place d'Armes, has been transformed into a park, in front of which stands the neo-Gothic Anglican Christ Church. The bustle of life is concentrated on Rue du Roi, with its shops, restaurants, cafés and old market, while Rue Augusta leads to a riverside park with views of the St. Lawrence, the harbour and the marina. Eight kilometres east of Sorel, the Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel church was decorated with superb frescoes by the painter Suzor-Coté.
