Thirty years ago, it was an island of fishermen. Today, as Indonesia's showcase island, Batam is richly endowed. Relocated multinationals and large Asian companies are jostling to take advantage of the growth triangle formed by Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The Indonesians want to make it Singapore's rival, but there's still a long way to go to reach its level.Three ports have been dug, eight industrial parks have been developed, communications towers and power plants have sprung up like mushrooms. Schools have been opened, and an airport receives long-haul flights. A whole new city has sprung up in just a few years. It now also welcomes many visitors attracted by its state-of-the-art tourist infrastructure.Batam is expensive, yet doesn't offer much in the way of interest; it's essentially a stopping-off point for those coming from Singapore to discover Sumatra.
