Before 1850, no one wanted to settle in a region where the land was black and oily. Then the boom made the Petrolia region the largest Canadian oil producer of the th century. A real disconcerting rush ensued, with its crazy fights between prospecteurs prospecteurs, its factories of clandestine nitroglycerin, which all ended up exploding, and its instant fortunes as quickly lost. Two museums tell this impressive episode: the Oil Museum of Canada in Oil Springs, just south of Petrolia, and the historic Location Petrolia Discovery, in Petrolia, where the largest black gold deposit was found, a few years after that of Oil Springs.
