In the south-east of the island, Hohoi is famous for its beautiful wild beach and its flowered pebbles, which have unfortunately almost disappeared in recent years. It is also here, on the heights, that the archeological site of Mauia is hidden, the remains of a completely open village. Restored in 2007 for the Marquesas Islands Arts Festival, it can facilitate the understanding of the workings of Marquesan society at the time. As for the site of Hakaohoka, it is more reserved for adventurers! Several renowned sculptors still live in this valley, including Jean Kautai, but also Sylvain and Petero, who work with flowered stone.
