Northeast of Nuku Hiva, you're in the airport district. Of great natural wealth, this part of the island is little covered with vegetation. It is the area of predilection for hikers, on foot or on horseback. But apart from these few visitors, it is clear that the area bears its name well! Just 40 years ago, crossing the island from Taiohae was a journey of more than 10 hours on horseback; the road was only cemented in 2012! Up to the Tekao Pass, one enjoys beautiful panoramas over the bay of Motuee, the Vaikave waterfall and the great canyon of Tapueahu. Up there, nice viewpoint on the Toovii plateau.
