From Taiohae, a steep trail leads to the Hakaui valley, one of the most grandiose sites on Nuku Hiva. It takes 4 hours to walk to Hakatea, then 15 minutes to the village of Hakaui. Be careful, this trail is not easy and the sun is strong, so bring a guide. Another option is to anchor at Hakatea, the adjacent bay, and then walk to Hakaui. Former stronghold of King Te Moana, this mythical valley has a paved royal road decorated with numerous tikis and pae pae. At the end of the valley is the Vaipo waterfall (350 m). As for the village, it is home to a few families who are still resisting the invaders and modernity.
