Situated at the confluence of the rivers Orava and Oravice, it was founded in 1265 by King Bela IV to cope with the Mongol invasions and then developed from 1369, when King Louis granted it the privileges of a royal city. Today, it is known for its small 17th century wooden church and has been a World Heritage Site since 2008.
