Next to the small village of Zemen (40 km south of Pernik), the monastery of the same name is not as important as the one in Rila. However, the murals inside the church are beautiful. The small church of Saint Ivan the Theologian dates from the 12th century. The interior frescoes date from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Renovated between 1970 and 1974, they were commissioned by the lord of the region, Constantin Dejan, who is represented in some scenes with his wife. Zemen was called Belovo until 1925, before its current name was given first to the train station and then to the entire village.
