Doboj/Добој (pronounced "doboi") has a population of about 26,000, 73% of which are Bosnian-Serbs. It is the capital of the municipality of Doboj (population 70,000), in the Bosnian Serb Republic. The town is 72 km northwest of Tuzla(via Srebrenik and Gračanica), 91 km north of Zenica, 94 km west of Banja Luka, and 127 km east of Bijeljina(via Brčko). Numerous bus connections to Banja Luka, Bijeljina, Tuzla, Zenica and Sarajevo, 4 train connections/day to Banja Luka and Prijedor. This industrial city was strongly affected by the last two wars (1941-1945 and 1992-1995). It lost most of its Bosnian and Bosnian-Croat inhabitants (51% of the population in 1991) but also, more recently, its railway connections with Sarajevo, Serbia and Croatia. However, it is not without charm. Crossed by the Bosna River and its tributaries, the Spreča and the Usora, Doboj is dominated by an impressive medieval fortress and has an interesting regional museum. Founded by the Romans as Canabea after the revolt of the Illyrian tribe of Dæsitiates in the early 1st century CE, the town also has a large open-air swimming pool (daily 8am-8pm in summer), numerous churches, several reconstructed mosques, one of the few active synagogues in the country, and a small tourist office (1 Cara-Dušana St., 900 m south of the fortress, Monday-Friday 7am-3pm). But the latter is still not very efficient, it must be said.
