Portlaoise is the administrative capital of County Laois, one of Ireland's smallest counties. It's a dynamic village with a population of around 18,000, though not very touristy (but that often makes it easier to get to know the locals, don't worry!) and more focused on agriculture, which is one of the county's main resources. During a visit to Portlaoise, a good starting point for enjoying the Irish countryside, don't miss a look at the ruins of Old St Peter's Church (dating from the 16th century), including its tower, in typical Anglo-Norman style.
