The national park covers more than 20,000 hectares. The aim is to protect the traditional Cape fynbos, and in particular the hundred or so species that grow here... and nowhere else on earth. Remains of human settlements have been found on the site. The southern tip of Africa is not nearly as spectacular as the Cape of Good Hope, but it is the southern tip: 34° 49' 58''. The locals, who are fed up with having their star stolen by Good Hope, point out that the position has been certified by the International Hydrographic Organization, to which South Africa belongs. Here the Atlantic Ocean embraces the Indian Ocean.
