Quimbaya is a small town in the department of Quindío, 21 km northwest of Armenia. Founded in 1914, it owes its name to the pre-Columbian culture present in the region before the arrival of the Spaniards. The Quimbayas disappeared at the end of the 16th century after a slow process of eradication. They are known to be excellent goldsmiths, as evidenced by the Gold Museum of Armenia, valuing gold for its ease of use and not for its material value. Quimbaya is famous for its Festival de Velas y Faroles, which takes place every year from December 6 to 9, in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Each neighborhood is adorned with candles and glittering lanterns. The most spectacular light display is awarded a prize.
